just as with watercolor, charcoal carries a dynamic of its own - it carves into a nice deep path of pigment here, and tapers into a delicate line over the thinned oil. These are just underbellies of future works, but I love alternating betwwen the stick of compressed charcoal and the oil. In the past, I've stopped after hte initial drawing. But the last batch of preperatory paintings got me excited about leaving some of the lines in. In some area, using it as a colorant, in other areas, exploiting its line.
